Night Game Drives

See The Bush In a Different Light

The bush is a completely different place at night, which is what makes Night Game drives so special. Night Game Drives give you the opportunity to explore the bush in a completely different light, opening your world to a whole host of nocturnal wildlife that you would otherwise have missed altogether. Aardvark, striped hyena, owls, night jar, bush babies and white-tailed mongoose are just the tip of the iceberg of what is a truly vast ecosystem of nightly creatures.

Night Game Drives also offer the possibility of revisiting some of the wildlife you came across during the day, only this time the animals are likely to be more active thanks to the cooler temperatures. You are much more likely to see a big cat (lion, leopard or cheetah) hunt early in the morning or late in the evenings for the same reason.

To add to the experience, camps and lodges that offer this activity will provide a special-built ‘open game viewing’ vehicle to conduct the Night Game Drive (click here to learn more about the different kind of safari vehicles). These safari vehicles have an ‘open’ cabin which drastically changes the dynamics of the game drive by increasing the level of interaction with your surroundings.

Furthermore, they are fitted with a “jump seat” on the bonnet to allow our trackers to easily find wildlife utilizing specially designed search lights. Follow the search light through the branches of trees and across the open plains and see what’s looking back at you.

Night Game Drives are not widely available on the Northern Safari Circuit due to strict regulations in the national parks. The only national parks that allow for this activity are Tarangire and Lake Manyara. There are also a couple of camps that facilitate this activity in their own private concessions located around the Serengeti national park. These concessions share the Serengeti national park’s rich ecosystems despite the fact that they are located just outside its geographical borders.

"Our Night Game Drive provided a memory I will never forget. From watching the sun go down with a glass of wine in hand and enjoying the company of new found friends to the pride of lions we came upon in the dark on our exciting ride back to the camp."
